KENYA & TANZANIA BIRDING & WILDLIFE SAFARIS

We offer four different safaris in East Africa.
Our combination program features the highlights of birding and big game safari in both Kenya and Tanzania. We offer a Tanzania only birding and big game safari and a Kenyan birding and big game safari. Our fourth program is an extension to the Coast of Tanzania that can be added to any of the three safaris.

Anthony Raphael earned his degree in Wildlife Management from the College of African Wildlife Management in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, Anthony took special interest in Field Ornithology (a hobby he had from childhood). Since then Anthony has led a number of trips in East Africa ranging from international university students, researchers, international birding groups and organizations, bird and wildlife photographers, keen ornithologists, university professors in various disciplines, entomologists, and casual tourists. His experience and skill in locating and identifying East African mammals, reptiles and primates and well over 900 bird species as well as his humor while leading groups on safari, is second to none, earning him the name ?The Man with an Eagle Eye?.

When out of the guiding schedules and out of the African bush, Anthony volunteers at the National Natural History Museum in Arusha (Tanzania) where he helps out in the Bird Department of the Museum. He also spends time training upcoming bird guides at a local college.

You are welcome to join Anthony on our upcoming bird and big game Safari to East Africa.

It is famous for its dense wildlife population. Thousands of animals - wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and fringe-eard oryx - migrate from the dry Masai Mara steppe to the Tarangire River looking for water. Lion and other predators follow the herds. A caldera is the broad, crater-like basin of a volcano formed by the collapse of the central cone. Dominated by cliffs standing some 600 meters high and presenting a sheer drop down to a wide open space of some 264 square km, the crater is one of the most amazing sights seen anywhere. The Crater is home to 25,000 larger mammals, almost half of them zebra and wildebeest. There are also gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest and wart hog. Such vast numbers attract predators a plenty, mainly lion and hyena but also cheetah and leopard. More than 100 species of birds not found in the Serengeti have been spotted here. Countless flamingos form a pink blanket over the soda lakes.

Day 15: CRATER TOUR/SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK (B,L,D)
This morning you will have your ? day crater tour and then be transferred to the Serengeti, which is actually a continuation of the Masai Mara Eco System. The Serengeti National Park is arguably the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world. "Serengeti" means "endless plains" in the Masai language, and within its boundaries are more than three million large mammals. About 35 species of plains animals can be seen here including the so called "big five" - elephant, rhino, lion (more than 2,000 of them), leopard and buffalo. During the wet season, November to May, most of the plains game congregates in Southern Serengeti, followed by their attendant predators. Some time in May or June the herds migrate North and West in search of water. They remain in North Serengeti and the western corridor during the dry season, July-October, returning South again as the November rains approach. The Wildebeest calving takes place on the short grass plains during late December to early February. In their wake follow the predators; lion cheetah and hunting dogs with vultures circling overhead. Other common species found here include hippo, giraffe, eland, impala and other antelope types, baboons, monkeys and a profusion of almost 500 bird species.

We will stay 2 nights in the southeast Serengeti at the Ndutu Lodge.

Dinner and Overnight. Speke Bay is part of Speke Gulf, named after the famous explorer John Hanning Speke, who, in 1858, discovered Lake Victoria to be the source of the Nile. Embraced by savannah, the Lodge looks like a small village, stretched out along the shores of the lake. The main buildings and luxury accommodation are round in form, built to perfection, painted white and thatched with a grass roof in the traditional style of the local tribe, the Sukuma. Eight bungalows are situated along the shore of the lake. Each bungalow is a separate structure designed to ensure your privacy. Over 150 species of bush, swamp and water birds live on the Lodge's 100 hectares of savannah. African Fish Eagles have a nest in a tree next to the lounge. TESTIMONIALS

"Thank you very much for all the thought that went into our trip to Kenya and Tanzania. It truly was the experience of a lifetime. Quite apart from the wonder of the wildlife, it was an education to catch a glimpse of rural and urban communities in East Africa. Every minute was engrossing.

The guides and drivers -- Cliff, Geitan, Anthony and Mjema -- were knowledgeable and kind, and it was a privilege to travel with them.

C. Savage & K. Bell Saskatchewan 2007

" When we put recently put together our annual Christmas letter to our friends and told them of some of our experiences, we were reminded of our trip and what a wonderful time we had. We were so fortunate that you were willing to arrange a tour for just three people. We were exceptionally fortunate to have Tony and Gaetan as our guides. Tony was extremely patient showing us birds. I actually believe that I saw most of the 400 species that we checked off. I never would have believed that we saw so many birds if Tony hadn't suggested that I count the checks that I had made in my bird book. Gaetan was an
especially careful driver and an excellent bird and animal spotter as well".
